Uses of Copper in Our Every Day Lives

As one of the oldest metals ever used, copper is a mineral and an element essential to our everyday lives. Due to its high ductility, malleability, thermal and electrical conductivity and resistance to corrosion properties, singularly or in combination, it has now become a major industrial metal. Reddish with a bright metallic lustre and a plentiful natural resource on Earth, copper is in fact everywhere in our everyday lives, whether you notice it or not, for it has important roles to play in our lives.

As copper is excellent at conducting electricity, engineers make use of this advantage by using copper in electronics such as smartphones, televisions, computers and etc.

Copper is used in the making of coins for a number of countries. Euro coins for example, have copper as their base as copper and its alloys are easily made into coins as a result of their workability and extraordinary resistance to impact and wear.

Household Items

There are many appliances that we use at home that contain copper, in which includes refrigerator, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, oven and etc. Additionally, the water pipes and the wiring in your walls in our house contain copper.

Renewable Energy

Do you know that a single 3 mega-watt wind turbine contains over 4 tons of copper? In order for technologies like solar panels, hybrid vehicles and wind turbines to generate and transmit renewable energy, significant amounts of copper are needed.

Advanced Medical Technology

Even advanced medical technology requires copper so as to be made possible. Imaging tools, X-rays, CT Scans and MRIs are some of the medical technologies that utilise copper.
